Alfred’s Arbor

From the cover of Yorkshire Life magazine in 1981

Dane & Rachel Clissold in Alfred’s Arbor. The branch that Dane is holding onto snapped off in 1985 and while efforts were made to ‘reconnect’ it, it eventually died but the rest of the vine flourishes to this day. Alfred is a fighter.

Alfred The Grape

Son of The Great Vine at Hampton Court

Alfred is the son of The Great Vine at Hampton Court, having been grown from a cutting taken around 1850.

The Great Vine at Hampton Court, vitis vinifera 'Schiava Grossa' (synonym: Black Hamburg), is now 250 years old and is the largest grape vine in the world. It was planted in 1768 while Lancelot 'Capability' Brown was in charge of the gardens at Hampton Court.

Alfred is celebrating his 175th birthday this year, and we intend to toast him with his own grape juice.

Why Alfred The Grape?

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”

- Audrey Hepburn
